Trust

I have not trusted
The goodness of man
For longer than I remember
I’ve stood in the darkness
In love with the night
My heart like snow in December

I wouldn’t believe
Trust my own eyes
Proof of one man’s kindness
I was sorely deceived
I never realized
I was stumbling in blindness

But I’ve taken a turn
And learned from the truth
Too much to stay in the dark
And I’ll never again
Be so quick to spurn
A glimmer of hope in the dark

For all the wrong reasons
I’ve learned not to trust
For all the wrong reasons
That crumbled to dust

I’m not sure I could see
The goodness in your mind
Or even if I would care
I just know that I feel
We’re getting further behind
And things are just going nowhere

I refused to believe
That I could get used to
Getting a little respect
So into my life I’d weave
All kinds of lies about you
All kinds of foolish dreck

But I’ve taken a turn
And learned from the truth
Too much to stay in the dark
And I’ll never again
Be so quick to spurn
A glimmer of hope in the dark

For all the wrong reasons
I’ve learned not to trust
For all the wrong reasons
That crumbled to dust
